Enrichment and training for monitor lizard

I am desperately trying to brainstorm ideas for enriching a bored water monitor. We are clicker training him at the moment, and moving him on to target training. He is smart!

He needs something to do during the day when we are not training him. Here are a few ideas, but I need tons more:

  • Big Dryer tubes for him to crawl through (bait with food?)
  • Crickets in PVC pipes he cannot get out
  • Worms hidden under newspaper
  • Legless jeans to crawl through
  • something bigger and different to swim every once and a while
  • toys floating in the water
  • plastic tubes to crawl through in the water
  • scent trailing a frozen-defrosted rodent around the enclosure while he is out then hidden for him to find

Ideas for more training

  • Condition (train) to walk on a harness by luring (we are currently working on this, more about it in a future post)

If you have any ideas, please let me know.  I would very much appreciate it and so would the lizard.

  1. So far he is liking all of the enrichment provided on this list. He especially like things put in his water dish to crawl through. I will gather some later pictures of his clicker training progress and add another post about that.
